Lino block print & water based ink
November 23rd, 2011

Alerted was a fun piece to draw. Your eyes are drawn to the exclamation point above the character’s head, but the initial drawing had marks over the pile of leaves to the mushroom’s left. The idea was that the mushroom (and viewer) was alerted to the fact that something wasn’t quite right about the approaching pile of foliage. When carving the lino block , the lines were too distracting and took away from final composition. The mark above the mushroom’s head tells everyone that there is something out of place and the additional marks were unnecessary. I really enjoy working with the subtractive process of carving and reacting to my characters as I work. On paper, I make the decisions about what works and what doesn’t, but in the carving process my characters sometimes speak for themselves.

This piece was featured in my December 2011 show: Growing Art. Click here to see all the pieces from the show.
